Weligama

Weligama is a small town on Sri Lanka’s southern coast known for its unique and traditional stilt fishermen. These fishermen sit carefully on a narrow crossbar attached to a single pole, balancing above the waves to catch fish. This ancient fishing method has been passed down through many generations and is still practiced today. Watching the fishermen against the backdrop of a glowing sunset is a memorable and special sight.

Another beautiful attraction in Weligama is Taprobane Island, also called Count de Mauny Island. At low tide, visitors can easily walk across the shallow sea to reach this small islet, making it a perfect spot for exploration and photography.

With its blend of traditional culture and natural beauty, Weligama offers a unique glimpse into coastal life in Sri Lanka.
