Udawalawe is a large nature reserve located near the Great Western mountain range. At its centre is the Udawalawe Reservoir, which supports the park’s rich wildlife. The main attraction here is the elephants. With over 600 elephants living in the park, visitors often see herds of up to 50 animals roaming the open plains. Because the vegetation is not very dense, Udawalawe is one of the best places in the world to watch elephants in their natural home.
Besides elephants, the park is home to many other animals such as buffalo, crocodiles, deer, sambur, and a variety of birds. Though less common, leopards and bears can also sometimes be seen.
Udawalawe offers an unforgettable wildlife experience, making it a must-visit for anyone interested in nature and animals.
