Yala National Park is Sri Lanka’s most popular wildlife destination. It covers about 151,778 hectares and includes five separate areas. The park has many types of habitats such as sandy dunes, scrub forests, river forests, rocky hills, secondary forests, and coastal lagoons with mangroves.
Yala is home to more than 44 species of mammals and over 200 kinds of birds. It is especially famous for having the highest number of leopards in the world. The special type of leopard found here, called Panthera Pardus Kotiya, is only found in Sri Lanka and is endangered.
